Salt Water [Medium Bowl]

  • ๐Ÿ’ง 2 cups warm water, warm to the touch
  • ๐Ÿง‚ 1 1/2 tsp salt

Masa Flour [Small Bowl]

  • ๐ŸŒฝ 2 cups masa corn flour or PAN, not cornmeal

Fry Base [12-inch Skillet]

  • ๐Ÿซ’ 2 tbsp vegetable oil

MAKE IT

Get Started

  1. Preheat the oven to 350ยฐF, if baking after frying.

Make the Dough

  1. Whisk the warm water and salt in the medium bowl until the salt has dissolved.
  2. Add the masa corn flour slowly, about 2 tbsp at a time, whisking as you go until no lumps appear.
  3. Continue adding the remaining flour until a dough forms and the whisk gets stuck.
  4. Switch to your hands and work the dough until it feels like play dough.
  5. Cover the dough with a towel and set it aside for about 5 minutes.

Shape and Cook the Arepas

  1. Form the dough into 6 balls using your hands.
  2. Flatten each ball until it is about 1 inch thick.
  3. Heat the vegetable oil in the 12-inch skillet over medium-high heat until shimmering.
  4. Fry the 6 arepas until brown spots appear.
  5. Transfer the arepas to the small baking sheet.
  6. Bake the arepas for 15 minutes, if using the oven.
  7. Cool the arepas for 5 minutes.

Finish and Serve

  1. Split each arepa in half to make a pouch.
  2. SERVE! Stuff with your favorite filling.
