Salt Water [Medium Bowl]
- ๐ง 2 cups warm water, warm to the touch
- ๐ง 1 1/2 tsp salt
Masa Flour [Small Bowl]
- ๐ฝ 2 cups masa corn flour or PAN, not cornmeal
Fry Base [12-inch Skillet]
- ๐ซ 2 tbsp vegetable oil

MAKE IT
Get Started
- Preheat the oven to 350ยฐF, if baking after frying.
Make the Dough
- Whisk the warm water and salt in the medium bowl until the salt has dissolved.
- Add the masa corn flour slowly, about 2 tbsp at a time, whisking as you go until no lumps appear.
- Continue adding the remaining flour until a dough forms and the whisk gets stuck.
- Switch to your hands and work the dough until it feels like play dough.
- Cover the dough with a towel and set it aside for about 5 minutes.
Shape and Cook the Arepas
- Form the dough into 6 balls using your hands.
- Flatten each ball until it is about 1 inch thick.
- Heat the vegetable oil in the 12-inch skillet over medium-high heat until shimmering.
- Fry the 6 arepas until brown spots appear.
- Transfer the arepas to the small baking sheet.
- Bake the arepas for 15 minutes, if using the oven.
- Cool the arepas for 5 minutes.
Finish and Serve
- Split each arepa in half to make a pouch.
- SERVE! Stuff with your favorite filling.
